History

Map showing bus route 66 traveling from 48th Street and Warner Road to Scottsdale Road and McDowell Road
Route 66 map from 1997

The earliest known routing of route 66 is from August 18, 1997, when it traveled from 48th St & Warner Rd, up 48th St, along Elliot Rd, Priest Dr, Baseline Rd, then up Mill Ave, looping through Downtown Tempe, then continuing up to Curry Rd, College Ave, McKellips Rd, and Scottsdale Rd, ending at McDowell Rd. By March 19, 2000, the southern end of the route was modified to travel from Guadalupe Rd & Shannon Dr (near Loop 101), along Guadalupe Rd, then up Mill Ave to Scottsdale Rd & McDowell Rd. On August 13, 2001, route 66 was combined with route 68, creating Route 66 - Mill/68th St, running from Scottsdale Fashion Square to Guadalupe Rd & Loop 101. On July 27, 2009, the route was truncated from Scottsdale Fashion Square to Loloma Station. On January 25, 2010, the northern end was truncated once again, to College Ave & McKellips Rd and the southern end was rerouted down Kyrene Rd to end at Pecos Rd. The route was truncated yet another time on July 26, 2010, now ending at Tempe Transportation Center and extended to Lone Butte Casino in the south, making up the current route. On October 25, 2021, route 65 was discontinued and frequency was boosted along route 66 to compensate.
