  • July 1992 - Route 81 created from Tempe Trolley Route 1, which served McClintock Dr and University Dr
  • June 1996 - Route 81 combined with route 82 to provide continuous service along McClintock Dr and Hayden Rd
  • August 18, 1997 - The earliest known exact routing of route 81 traveled from Dobson Rd & Frye Rd in Chandler, up Dobson Rd, Warner Rd, River Pkwy, Elliot Rd, McClintock Dr, University Dr, looping through Downtown Tempe, then back up McClintock Dr and Hayden Rd, along Via de Ventura, Pima Rd, Via Linda, 90th St, and Shea Blvd. Trips continued along Shea Blvd to Scottsdale Rd on weekends and on weekdays, trips went up Hayden Rd to 83rd Place
  • March 19, 2000 - By this point, the northern end of the route had been rerouted to travel up 92nd St from Shea Blvd to Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd, then down to Hayden Rd & 83rd Pl
  • July 24, 2006 - Northern terminus loop adjusted
  • July 23, 2007 - Diversion into Tempe Marketplace added
  • July 28, 2008 - Southern end rerouted from ASU Research Park, down Warner Rd and McClintock Dr to Chandler Fashion Center
  • December 29, 2008 - Diversion to Downtown Tempe eliminated
  • January 25, 2010 - Full-route trips were streamlined onto McClintock Dr and short trips to ASU Research Park were rerouted via Warner Rd
  • July 25, 2011 - Northern part of the route rerouted from 94th St, down Raintree Dr instead of Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd
  • April 25, 2016 - Route modified to use Indian Bend Rd instead of Via de Ventura between Hayden Rd and Pima Rd
  • April 23, 2018 - Route modified to serve the new Mustang Transit Center
  • October 22, 2018 - Northern end truncated to 90th St & Shea Blvd with the introduction of the Mustang Trolley
  • October 28, 2019 - Route modified to use McDonald Dr instead of Indian Bend Rd between Hayden Rd and Pima Rd
  • April 25, 2020 - Northern end modified to eliminate stops north of Mustang Transit Center
