History
The earliest known routing of route 45 is from 1999. At this time, the Broadway route was split into route 45 for Phoenix and Tempe and route 46 for Mesa. Therefore, route 45 only traveled from 15th Ave & Broadway Rd in the west, diverting off of Broadway at 48th St for a loop around Alameda Dr, Fair Lane, Huntingon Dr, Potter Rd, and Southern Ave, before going back up 48th St to Broadway. Afterwards, the route continued down Broadway through Tempe, then turning north at Dobson Rd in Mesa, going east on Main St, right up to the East Valley Institute of Technology campus at Longmore. On March 19, 2000, route 46 was combined into route 45, resulting in the extension of route 45 from the East Valley Institute of Technology, back down Main St and Dobson Rd, then east on Broadway Rd. At Recker Rd, route 45 turned north again, going up to Arbor Ave to serve Valley Luteran Hospital (now Banner Baywood Medical Center), then traveling down Power Rd to Superstition Springs Transit Center. There was also a diversion to serve Mesa Senior Center, along Center St, but only on westbound trips. On January 14, 2002, the western end of the route was extended to Southern Ave & 19th Ave, and while it appears to not be mentioned anywhere, it seems like the diversion down 48th St was eliminated around this time as well. On April 15, 2002, the diversion to the East Valley Institute of Technology was eliminated. On December 29, 2008, the deviation to Mesa Senior Center was eliminated and a new deviation to Sycamore/Main St Transit Center was created upon the opening of the light rail. On January 27, 2014, the turnaround loop at the western end was reduced, truncating the route from 19th Ave & Southern Ave to Broadway Rd & 19th Ave. The light rail deviation was changed from Sycamore/Main St Transit Center to the Gilbert Rd/Main St Transit Center upon the completion of the light rail extension on May 18, 2019.
