- August 18, 1997 - The earliest known routing of route 3 traveled from 43rd Ave & Union Hills Dr, down 43rd Ave, over to Metrocenter Mall Transit Center via Dunlap Ave, then back down 43rd Ave, along Van Buren St, ending at Galvin Pkwy. Weekend trips traveled from Metrocenter to Galvin Pkwy, then continued along Van Buren St, which becomes Mill Ave, into Downtown Tempe, ending at College Ave & University Dr
- March 19, 2000 - Some time before this point, the 43rd Ave section was split off into route 43 and route 3 traveled from Van Buren St & 51st Ave to the Phoenix Zoo
- January 14, 2002 - Western end extended to Van Buren St & 67th Ave
- July 26, 2010 - Western end extended to La Canada Blvd & 4th St in Avondale to replace route 3A
