Red Line map from 1993
  • March 1, 1993 - The Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow lines were introduced as part of a bus restructuring plan to directly serve major shopping, employment, and entertainment centers around the valley. The Red Line traveled along Beardsley Rd from 29th Ave, down 35th Ave to Metrocenter Transit Center, down Dunlap Ave and 19th Ave, Camelback Rd, and down Central Ave into Downtown Phoenix. From there, the route continued along Washington St, 24th St, and Buckeye Rd, through Sky Harbor International Airport, back up to Washington St, then down Mill Ave into Downtown Tempe to the College Ave bus stops. Past Downtown Tempe, the route continued down Mill Ave and Apache Blvd and into Mesa on Main St, looping around Gilbert Rd, University Dr, and Guthrie St at its terminus. The Red Line also seemed to have an internal route number of 301.
  • August 18, 1997 - Some time before this point, the western end of the route was truncated to Metrocenter Transit Center and the route was rerouted from Washington St to University Dr to access Downtown Tempe
  • March 19, 2000 - By this point, a deviation was added to serve East Valley Institute of Technology along Main St in Mesa
  • July 8, 2002 - Red Line was combined with route 40 to increase frequency between Central Station and Tempe
  • January 22, 2007 - Rerouted to travel down Van Buren St and 7th St between Central Station and Washington/Jefferson St, likely due to light rail construction around Central and Washington
  • December 29, 2008 - Red Line eliminated when the light rail was introduced
